Prep's Second Rhodes Scholar Announced

Prep for Prep was proud to learn that its second Rhodes Scholar was elected this fall. Phillip Yao (XXV/Trinity '09, Harvard) was selected from an already elite group of 838 American undergraduates nominated by their colleges and universities. With a major in physics and a minor in philosophy, Phil is a John Harvard Scholar with a 3.94 grade point average. While on a Weissman Fellowship in Mumbai last summer, he created a virtual library for over one million under-privileged students. He has held internships in the Office of Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the law firm of Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz. Phil also participated in Prep's Institute for Entrepreneurship and served as a Teaching Assistant in the Preparatory Component, readying the next generation of Prep students for the rigors of independent school. He plans to earn his M.Sc. in learning and technology while at Oxford.

Reflecting on his Prep experience after the announcement, Phil said, “Prep fundamentally changed the way I view the world. It instilled in me both a social awareness and passion for education. Every teacher and every friend I had at Prep challenged me to be critical and informed about crucial problems in American society.”
