Lilac Ball Nets $3 million

Prep for Prep’s Lilac Ball on June 9 was a resounding success, raising $3 million (net) and attracting over 1,100 guests to The Waldorf Astoria. The gala was a tribute to longtime Prep Trustees Anne & John Hall, David A. Nadler, and Fay & Bill Shutzer, who have a combined 82 years of service on the Prep Board. The event was also a celebration of the 132 members of Prep’s high school Class of 2014. More than 150 Prep alumni supporters were on hand to celebrate.
Senior Speakers Robert Rush (P9 XXIII/Andover ’14, Harvard) and Nicole Ubinas (XXX/Nightingale ’14, Brown) served as Masters of Ceremonies. With her mother’s encouragement and Prep’s guidance, Nicole spoke about the resilience needed to overcome obstacles: “I realized the bar wasn’t just being good – it was about being excellent… not to be merely good, but to go beyond expectations, in spite of all burdens.” Robert’s Prep journey is shared by many of his fellow seniors: “I know I am a better person [now] who has tried to embody the motto that Prep instilled in me: Excellence, Integrity, Commitment and Courage. I wanted to serve as an example so that others know that finding your place isn’t about fitting into the puzzle, but expanding it, making room for others to join, and creating a better masterpiece.”

Nearly 90% of this year’s Prep high school class was admitted to colleges characterized as "Most Competitive" or “Highly Competitive,” according to Barron’s 2013 Profiles of American Colleges. Wesleyan is the leading college choice, with 9 students enrolling from this year’s class, followed by Harvard (8), Columbia (7), Penn (5), and Yale (5).

Since 1986, the Lilac Ball has served as Prep’s keystone event. It not only honors a corporate leaders with a commitment to education and young people, but also celebrates the hard work and achievements of our high school seniors. Proceeds from the event support Prep’s mission of creating a more diverse national leadership pool by providing New York’s most promising students of color access to a superior education and life-changing opportunities.
