A Statement from Pablo Zevallos

Fostering a strong community is one of my most deeply held values. I learned the importance of community from my parents, who came to America from Ecuador in the 1980s. My dad has put in very long hours working in building maintenance for over twenty-five years and my mom was a full-time college student and worker at the age of 17, rose to middle management in her early 20s, became a realtor, and is now a full-time mom to my sister and me. But no attempt at progress is linear, and no story is bereft of challenges and tough times. I learned young that, in the good times and the bad, we all had to stick together, and that although we could not take all the credit for all of our successes or assume all the blame for bad breaks and hard times, we had an obligation to each other to improve our lot.

At Davidson, I've done my best to uphold these values through my involvement on campus. I'm in my second year of involvement with the Student Government Association, having served as Junior Class President for the last eleven months, served on the Committee for Campus and Religious Life, the Religious Life Council, and the Catholic Campus Ministry leadership team. I ran for Student Body President because I know that, with my experience, my record of working with others, Ben's experience and his track record, the vision we have outlined, and--most importantly--the conversations we have had and will continue to have with our classmates, we can work together to continue to build an even more welcoming community for all here at Davidson. Forging an inclusive progress, one where we preserve the best of who we are as a campus while challenging ourselves to do better in looking out for each other's needs and aspirations, is a challenge that we look forward to undertaking.

Having earned the trust of the Student Body, we will now honor our commitment to effective governance and tangible results. We have established bi-weekly meetings with the President of the College in an effort to create an effective partnership through which we can present the concerns and needs of the student body as part of the conversation on the future of Davidson. We will also empower our members by giving greater direction to our committee system and encouraging them to contribute to the many advisory councils and boards to which we appoint students. Over the course of the next year, we won't always agree--not Ben and I, not our members and our leadership, not our SGA and the administration--but, by leading through shared values and effective listening, we are convinced of our ability to find areas of common ground to deliver real results for our campus.
