Prep for Prep student Kevin Su (XXVIII/Collegiate ’12, Yale) has been named a 2012 United States Presidential Scholar, which honors one boy and one girl from each state for academic excellence and leadership in their communities.
In addition to scoring a perfect 2400 on his SATs, Kevin was Co-President of both the Asian Cultural Society and the Gay Straight Alliance at Collegiate. He was also Editor-in-Chief of the school’s Latin and Ancient Greek literary magazine. He spent spring breaks at an orphanage in the Dominican Republic, teaching English and renovating the facilities. Prep is proud of Kevin’s accomplishments and wishes him the best as he begins freshman year at Yale this fall.
The Scholars were invited to a special recognition weekend in Washington, D.C. in June. Standing in for President Barack Obama who was attending the G20 Summit, Secretary of Education Arne Duncan presented the Scholars with medals of distinction and applauded their dedication to the award’s core values of scholarship, service, leadership, and creativity. The weekend's events included tours of the White House, a teacher recognition dinner, professional advancement workshops, community service, and a showcase of visual and performing arts by the scholars.
The United States Presidential Scholars Program was established in 1964 to recognize some of the nation’s most accomplished and inspiring graduating high school seniors. Over 3,000 students across the nation are nominated each year based on exceptional SAT or ACT scores, along with a handful of students who excel in the arts or live abroad. After a rigorous selection process, 141 students are named Presidential Scholars.
